Bio-Emulation dental_photonics: decoding optical properties of tissues and materials.

Lecture Description:

Tooth structures form a complex optical medium for light as it passes through enamel, dentino-enamel complex and dentin. Furthermore, this behavior changes over the years, as tissues change in morphology and composition. Understanding light propagation phenomena in these structures as well as dental materials is essential for a better shade selection during clinical and laboratory procedures. Photography protocols with different kinds of illumination becomes a critical part of the procedure: from reflected light to transmitted light and more specialized light sources like ultraviolet and cross-polarized light. Only the proper application of these protocols as well as an accurate shade measurement will allow us to faithfully emulate nature and provide invisible restorations to our patients.

Objective:
  1. Better understanding of optical properties of tissues and materials.
  2. Learn advanced photographic techniques for shade analysis.
  3. Application to clinical procedures, direct and indirect.
