Color of natural teeth

Lecture Description: 

Color and appearance are pertinent for esthetic outcomes and the natural appearance of dental restorations. This lecture will inform on a prospective clinical study of the in-vivo color range of human teeth using a research-grade noncontact spectroradiometer. The database
was subsequently subjected to machine learning-based spectral modeling.
This presentation will contribute to understanding the color appearance and provide clinical and research recommendations, a biomimetic guide for enhancing esthetics.

Objective: 
  • Understand the nature of color appearance and their clinical relevance from the day-to-day dentistry point of view
  • Review and contrast traditional (empirical) and contemporary (evidence-based) approaches to tooth color
  • Learn about the benefits of spectral modeling.
About presenter: 

My academic background includes a BSc Degree in Physics (Medical Physics) from the University of Craiova, Romania, and a BSc Degree in Optics and Optometry from the University of Granada. I have also completed a Master's degree in Advanced Methods and Techniques in Physics from the University of Granada, a Master's degree in Quantum Field Theory from the University of Craiova, and an International PhD "Cum Laude" in Physical Sciences from the University of Granada in 2013.

I currently hold the position of Associate Professor in the Department of Optics at the Faculty of Science, University of Granada, Spain. Additionally, I am a member of the Research Group FQM-151 at the University of Granada, an Adjunct Scientist at the Houston Center for Biomaterials and Biomimetics at the University of Texas since 2012, and an Honorary Research Associate at the University of Craiova, Romania, since 2019.

My research focuses on objective color measurements and the development of optical techniques for evaluating biomaterials, with applications in dentistry and tissue engineering. This research is conducted in collaboration with national and international research groups, including TIC-117, CTS-115, the Department of Stomatology UGR, and HCBB at the University of Texas.

I have published 47 papers in JCR Journals, with 23 in T1 Journals of their respective categories. My publication record also includes eight book chapters (four in "Color and Appearance in Dentistry," published by Springer Nature in 2020), 14 conference proceedings, and over 60 conference abstract communications. This extensive publication history has resulted in an h-index of 26 and a total of 3150 citations (according to Scopus).

I have served on the Scientific Committee of several international conferences, including ISDA 2011, TERMIS 2011, and IWBBIO 2014-2024, and acted as Project Manager (PI) for two research grants from the Spanish Research Authority and a grant from CEIBioTic Granada. Additionally, I have been a Research Team Member in seven research projects funded by various national and regional authorities in Spain and have managed five research contracts with different dental manufacturing companies. I am currently a consultant for UPCERA and Ivoclar.

I am also a Professor (PhD Advisor) at the Doctoral School in Physics and Space Science of the University of Granada, Secretary of the Society for Color and Appearance in Dentistry (SCAD) and Section Editor for Color and Appearance for the Journal of Esthetic and Restorative Dentistry. Furthermore, I serve as an Expert Evaluator for the Romanian Ministry of Research and Innovation and the Spanish Ministry of Science, Research, and Universities.

As a peer reviewer, I have reviewed for more than 30 scientific journals, including PLoS One, Color Research and Application, Journal of Dentistry, Journal of Esthetic and Restorative Dentistry, Clinical Oral Investigations, Biomed Research International, Scientific Reports, BMC Oral Health, Sensors, and Spectroscopy Letters. In 2013, I was honored with the prestigious VITA Award for Excellence in Research Related to Color and Appearance in Dentistry and received Best Poster Communication Awards at SCAD 2010, SCAD 2011, and SEPES IFED 2019.

In the field of quality assurance, I am an active International Expert Evaluator for ARACIS – the Romanian Agency for Quality Assurance in Higher Education, and a former member (2018-2022) of the Technical Committee CTN 45 "Ophthalmic Optics" of AENOR – the Spanish Association for Standardization and Certification.

Rade D. Paravina, DDS, MS, PhD
Dr. Paravina is a tenured professor in the Department of Restorative Dentistry and Proshodontics, University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston. He serves as Director of the John M. Powers, PhD, Houston Center for Biomaterials and Biomimetics (HCBB). Dr. Paravina has authored/co-edited three books, 15 book chapters, 300+ peer-reviewed publications (papers and abstracts), and has designed/developed several dental products and tests. Dr. Paravina is founder and past president of the Society for Color and
Appearance in Dentistry. He is President-Elect of the American Academy of Esthetic Dentistry. He serves as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Esthetic and Restorative Dentistry.


Razvan Ghinea, BSc, MS, PhD
Dr. Ghinea is presently Associate Professor in the Department of Optics at the Faculty of Science, University of Granada, Spain. He is a PhD Advisor at the Doctoral School in Physics and Space Science of the University of Granada, Secretary of the Society for Color and Appearance in Dentistry (SCAD) and Section Editor for Color and Appearance for the Journal of Esthetic and Restorative Dentistry.
Dr. Ghenea’s has published 47, eight book chapters, 14 conference proceedings, and over 60 conference abstract communications. He is a recipient of VITA Award for Excellence in Research Related to Color and Appearance in Dentistry and Best Poster Communication Awards at SCAD 2010, SCAD 2011, and SEPES IFED 2019.
